How to Choose
🏆 Best Overall — Bitwarden
Open source, independently audited, generous free tier with unlimited passwords across all devices, and self-hosting option. The best value and most transparent choice for most users.
👥 Best for Teams — 1Password
Polished UX, secure team vaults, travel mode, and excellent business features. Secret Key adds an extra layer. Worth the premium for professional use.
🔒 Most Private — KeePassXC
Fully offline, local-only storage. No cloud, no servers, no breach risk from the provider. Sync manually or via your own encrypted cloud storage. Best for high-risk individuals.
🛠️ Tech-savvy — Vaultwarden
Self-hosted Bitwarden-compatible server. Full control over your data. Requires VPS or home server setup. Premium features unlocked for free when self-hosted.
🔑 What Encryption Means
All listed managers use zero-knowledge encryption — the provider cannot see your passwords. AES-256 and Argon2 are the gold standards. XChaCha20 (NordPass) is also excellent.
⚠️ What to Avoid
Avoid browser-only password managers as primary vaults. Never reuse passwords. Never store passwords in plain text, spreadsheets, or notes apps without encryption.
